In short: Trauma and grief counselling is specialized treatment for PTSD, childhood trauma, abuse, accident-related trauma, and bereavement, delivered by a trauma-trained Muslim counsellor. Methods include EMDR-informed approaches, trauma-focused CBT, and grief-focused CBT within a faith-sensitive framework, online across Canada, $175 per 50-minute session, with insurance coverage through most plans.

Trauma and grief can affect every aspect of your life: emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Whether it stems from childhood experiences, abuse, loss, displacement, a motor vehicle accident, or the death of someone you love, our counselling supports you in a safe, Islamically informed environment where you set the pace and nothing is forced. You will never be made to feel that your pain is excessive, un-Islamic, or a sign of weak faith.

What we help with

You don't need to be in crisis to deserve support.

  • PTSD and complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
  • Childhood trauma and attachment wounds
  • Emotional, physical, or spiritual abuse
  • Motor vehicle accident (MVA) trauma and driving anxiety
  • War, displacement, and refugee trauma
  • Intergenerational and cultural trauma
  • Death of a parent, spouse, child, or loved one
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal loss
  • Divorce and the end of a marriage
  • Spiritual grief: loss of faith, community, or connection to Allah

The Islamic perspective

Trauma and grief can complicate your relationship with Allah; survivors often carry questions like "why did this happen to me?" Our counsellors hold space for those questions without judgment. The Prophet ﷺ wept at the death of his son Ibrahim and grieved openly for Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) years after her passing. Healing within an Islamic framework means your faith can become part of your recovery rather than another source of pain, incorporating spiritual resources only when and how you want them.

Questions before you start

A non-profit, trusted by our community

A Zakat-eligible non-profit recognized by the Canadian Council of Imams and AMJA. More than 2,000 people reached out to us last year.

Will I have to talk about the details of what happened?

No. Trauma treatment today does not require reliving events before you're ready. Your counsellor will focus first on safety and stabilization; processing happens gradually, at your pace.

Is it un-Islamic to grieve deeply or for a long time?

No. The Prophet ﷺ grieved deeply and openly. Islamic scholarship affirms the naturalness of grief. What matters is having support, and prolonged, complicated grief responds well to specialized treatment.

What is MVA (motor vehicle accident) support?

If you've been in a car accident, we provide specialized psychological support, including driving anxiety reintegration and psychological assessments, that may be covered through your auto insurance accident benefits. See our MVA support page for details.

How long does this kind of counselling take?

It depends on the nature of the trauma or loss. Single-incident trauma may resolve in a few months of weekly sessions; complex trauma and grief take longer. There's no required waiting period to start, and your counsellor will build a plan with you and review it regularly.
