Frequently asked questions

What is Psychotherapy?

Counselling and Psychotherapy at the Canadian Muslim Counselling agency is a process of intervention that is rooted in the idea of the “talking cure”. This process is guided by extensive research done on human behavior and empirically validated ways of intervening to alleviate psychological disarray. In Islamic terminology, this is an attempt at understanding Allah’s system and structure. The Qur’an instructs humankind to seek out and reflect on the signs and creation of Allah and to study them as a means of attaining nearness to Him. Here at Canadian Muslim Counselling, we utilize psychotherapy in a similar way to assist in the attainment of spiritual and psychological serenity.

This is my first time. How does therapy work?

It is totally normal to feel overwhelmed when considering therapy. This sentiment is shared by many of our clients when they first reach out.

Meeting with a therapist will allow you to work through your challenges and empower you to develop healthier, meaningful, and effective strategies to reach your goals. This is done by several approaches to psychotherapy. We can incorporate Islamic elements in our therapeutic process as well.

Do I need a referral to see a therapist?

Not at all! You do not need a referral to book an appointment. Our services are open to everyone without the need of a referral.

How much does each session cost?

The cost for our services is generally $175/session.

However, we understand that this may be a bit steep for individuals in need of services. For prospective clients who do not have insurance coverage, we offer a sliding scale at reduced rates. Please reach out to us if you want to learn more about securing a reduced rate.

Presently, OHIP, OW or ODSP do not cover psychotherapy services, but fortunately many insurance plans do. We encourage you to speak with your insurance provider to determine whether counselling services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist and/or Registered Social Worker are covered by your plan.

We provide detailed invoices for all sessions, including the  necessary information for your insurance claims.

What if my therapist is not a good fit for me?

We want your experience to be as comfortable and seamless, so please reach out to us and we are happy to pair you with another therapist. We appreciate your feedback.

What does therapy feel like?

As time goes on and you get to know your therapist, you’ll begin to experience the “real work” of therapy.  When this happens you will feel comfortable and at ease in therapy.  Sometimes you might start therapy before you feel totally ready.  You might attend a few sessions and then leave – and that’s okay.  Resistance in therapy is normal. Many people feel nervous before their therapy sessions. When change begins to happen and you make the big decision to attend therapy, you might feel nervous and not want to come to your appointment.  Faced with sharing your thoughts and deepest emotions with a relative stranger, you might want to back out from nerves and fear. Usually if you attend the session anyways, your nerves disappear and you’re glad you went.  If you’re with the right therapist, those nerves and fear dissipate as your relationship and trust develops.

How does booking with your clinic work?

Once we receive your request, we will ensure we have the information we need about your availability, the type(s) of therapy you are looking for, the concerns you would like to discuss in therapy (e.g., trust, communication, anxiety, etc.), and your insurance coverage (if applicable). With this information, the administrative team who manage the clinic will assess and match you with the therapist at our clinic who is the best fit for you.

You will be called by the administrative team to (if opted in) to welcome you to our practice and book your initial appointment. If we cannot get a hold of you over the phone, you will receive an email with all the necessary details about booking your first session with your therapist.  If you’re interested, we also offer a 15-minute phone consultation with your therapist prior to booking a first session.

Are you covered by insurance?

Most extended insurance companies do cover our services.  This should increase with the College of Registered Psychotherapists now established. Even if your insurance does not cover our services, psychotherapists’ rates are often more affordable than a psychologist. If your insurance coverage does not cover psychotherapists, please contact us for a sample letter to submit to your HR department and to your policy manager.
