Frequently Asked Questions:
Muslim Therapy and Islamic Counselling
What is Psychotherapy?
Muslim counselling and psychotherapy at Canadian Muslim Counselling is a process of intervention rooted in the idea of the “talking cure.” This process is guided by extensive research on human behaviour and empirically validated ways of intervening to alleviate psychological disarray. In Islamic terminology, this is an attempt at understanding Allah’s system and structure. The Qur’an instructs humankind to seek out and reflect on the signs and creation of Allah and to study them as a means of attaining nearness to Him. Here at Canadian Muslim Counselling, we utilise Islamic counselling and psychotherapy in a similar way to assist in the attainment of spiritual and psychological serenity.
This is my first time. How does therapy work?
It is totally normal to feel overwhelmed when considering Muslim therapy. This sentiment is shared by many of our clients when they first reach out.
Meeting with a licensed Muslim therapist will allow you to work through your challenges and empower you to develop healthier, meaningful, and effective strategies to reach your goals. This is done through several approaches to psychotherapy. We can incorporate Islamic elements in our therapeutic process as well.
Do I need a referral to see a therapist?
Not at all. You do not need a referral to book an appointment with a Muslim therapist. Our Islamic counselling services are open to everyone without the need for a referral.
How much does each session cost?
The cost for our Muslim counselling services is generally $175 per session.
We understand that this may be a barrier for some individuals. For prospective clients without insurance coverage, we offer a sliding scale at reduced rates. Please reach out if you want to learn more about securing a reduced rate.
Presently, OHIP, OW, and ODSP do not cover psychotherapy services; but many insurance plans do. We encourage you to speak with your insurance provider to determine whether halal therapy services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist and/or Registered Social Worker are covered by your plan. Our services may be eligible for reimbursement through many extended health benefits plans; we recommend verifying coverage directly with your provider.

What if my therapist is not a good fit for me?
We want your experience with Muslim therapy to be as comfortable and seamless as possible. Please reach out to us and we are happy to pair you with another licensed Muslim therapist. We appreciate your feedback.
What does therapy feel like?
As time goes on and you get to know your Muslim therapist, you will begin to experience the real work of therapy. When this happens you will feel comfortable and at ease. Sometimes you might start Islamic counselling before you feel totally ready, you might attend a few sessions and then leave, and that is okay. Resistance in therapy is normal.
Many people feel nervous before their first sessions. When change begins to happen and you make the big decision to attend therapy, you might feel nervous and not want to come to your appointment. Usually if you attend the session anyway, your nerves disappear and you are glad you went. If you are with the right therapist, those nerves dissipate as your relationship and trust develops.
How does booking with your clinic work?
Once we receive your request, we will ensure we have the information we need about your availability, the type of Muslim counselling you are looking for, the concerns you would like to discuss — such as anxiety, communication, or trust — and your insurance coverage if applicable.
Our administrative team will match you with the licensed Muslim therapist at our clinic who is the best fit for you. You will be contacted to welcome you to our practice and book your initial appointment. We also offer a free 15-minute consultation with your therapist prior to booking your first session. Book your free consultation here.
Are you covered by insurance?
Most extended insurance plans do cover our Muslim counselling services. Our services may be eligible for reimbursement through many extended health benefits plans — we recommend verifying coverage directly with your insurance provider.
Even if your insurance does not fully cover our services, our rates are often more affordable than a psychologist. If your coverage does not include Islamic counselling services, please contact us for a sample letter to submit to your HR department and policy manager.
